The Greater Vallejo Recreation District has a long history of hosting the Gobble Gobble Giveaway event. This year, an impressive 100 families have registered to receive free turkeys and side dishes, a significant increase from last year's 75 families. Event Coordinator Emely Mendez, who participated in the event for the first time last year, feels more prepared this time. She stated, "Going into it this year, I have a better understanding of what to expect and how to prepare for the event."
Event Details and Logistics
The Gobble Gobble Giveaway is set for Nov. 27, the day before Thanksgiving, and it will be a quick-paced event that requires extensive preparation. Mendez described it as a "pick up and go type of event" where they will load a turkey kit into each family's trunk, including a turkey and sides for their dinner. Families need to be registered in advance to ensure the correct number of kits are prepared. Those not registered but in need will be placed on a waiting list.Last year, local stores played a crucial role in providing the food. Mendez expressed her gratitude, saying, "They are the ones that have been donating and helping us out a ton. They have given us gift cards to purchase the kits and prepare them." In addition, donation bins have been set up at each GVRD site, allowing staff and the public to contribute. Mendez mentioned, "We have a bunch of stuffing and mashed potatoes and stuff that gets dropped off at all the different sites." This week, they will start prepping the boxes for the turkey kits and get them ready for the event.Although there is a lot of preparation involved, Mendez's motivation is to help the community. She said, "I like being able to provide a meal to all these families. You know, a lot of people are going through a tough time right now, so just being helpful and having these resources available makes me really happy."Season of Giving at GVRD
The Gobble Gobble Giveaway is just the beginning of the GVRD's season of giving. From their tree lighting in early December with free cocoa to their Breakfast with Santa, which offers a free breakfast and toy, the GVRD has organized a wide range of activities and events for those in need or looking to donate. These events not only provide assistance but also bring the community together during the holiday season. If you're interested in participating or know someone in need, here are the details:WHAT: Gobble Gobble GiveawayWHEN: Nov. 27, 4-6:30 p.m.WHERE: 395 Amador St., Vallejo. The GVRD's efforts to give back during the holiday season are truly commendable and make a significant impact on the lives of many families.New
